Vein Sclerotherapy

Vein sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive procedure that eliminates varicose reticular veins and spider veins in the legs. Varicose veins are common in healthy individuals but may present an embarrassing and sometimes painful problem. Their bulging bluish reddish appearance can be seen around the legs and in other areas of the lower extremities. It is a problem that causes self-consciousness and discomfort. But with today’s vein treatments, patients don’t have to be bothered by the appearance of their legs anymore. Sclerotherapy uses an injectable solution that is introduced directly into the vein. [1] The treatment causes the vein to shut down, and forces blood to be redirected to healthier veins. The collapsed vein is then absorbed into the tissue and fades from sight. Patients can look forward to smooth, silky legs with a vein sclerotherapy treatment. For over 30 years, Dr. David Naar at Premier Vein Clinic in Westlake, OH has helped patients regain their self-confidence. About Varicose Veins

Varicose veins make themselves known as unmistakable knotted,cord-like veins that run close to the surface of the skin. These swollen and winding veins are usually seen in the legs and feet. Spider veins are smaller and appear as tiny webs of red, blue, and purple veins that also twist and turn close to the surface of the skin. They may cause mild pain, aching, tenderness, and itching. However, a small percentage of patients may have varicose veins that can develop concerning complications.

The appearance of these veins is caused when the veins don’t function properly. Veins have valves that stop blood from flowing backward. When they fail to move blood normally, the blood collects in the veins instead of continuing back to your heart, and the veins become enlarged as a result. Unfortunately, varicose veins are very common in older adults. [2]

About Sclerotherapy Treatment

Varicose veins can be a thing of the past with the help of sclerotherapy. The effective, quick treatment can leave your skin free from the appearance of unwanted veins. The treatment involves a solution called sclerosant, which is injected into the problematic vein using an ultra-fine needle. The solution irritates the lining of the blood vessel, causing permanent damage to the internal lining of the vein wall., This subsequently triggers an inflammatory cascade. This swelling cuts off blood flow and causes the vessel to harden and shrink. When this happens, the body recognizes these veins as dead and will begin the process of absorbing them into the body. [3] Over time, the vessel turns into scar tissue that fades from view. Multiple veins can be injected at each sclerotherapy session.

Preparation

Sclerotherapy is a simple injectable treatment that needs little preparation. However, please follow any pre-treatment instructions that Dr. Naar’s team provides. Some patients may be asked to discontinue their regular skincare routine the day before their vein sclerotherapy treatment. Dr. Naar may also instruct you to temporarily hold off on taking certain medications and supplements for a few weeks leading up to your treatment as they may affect your results.

Procedure

What is Recovery like Following sclerotherapy?

Dr. Naar will start your treatment by cleaning the treatment areas. He will then inject the sclerosant solution into the vein or veins being treated using an ultra-fine needle. The injection of this solution irritates the lining of the vein which causes it to swell and block the flow of blood. In time, these veins will be absorbed by your body and will go away on their own. [4] The number of injections performed will depend on the size and number of veins being treated. Once the injections are complete, Dr. Naar will apply a compression stocking and massage the area to keep blood out of the injected vessel and disperse the solution. Some patients may experience mild discomfort in the treatment area, but shouldn’t last more than a couple of minutes after the final injection. Your treatment will take less than an hour. Immediately after the injection, Dr. Naar will instruct you to walk a short distance to encourage blood circulation.

Recovery

The recovery process is quick. Patients can return home immediately after treatment. Residual soreness may be felt but will resolve in the next few days. Please do not sit for prolonged periods for three days after treatment. Dr. Naar recommends patients take frequent walks to facilitate adequate blood flow. Light movement combined with wearing compression stockings for two weeks will hasten your recovery.

Results

The results of sclerotherapy are resoundingly clear. The treatment is highly effective in treating visible veins. Small varicose or spider veins can resolve themselves as soon as the injection is administered. Larger vein networks may need 3-4 months to completely heal. [5] And in some cases, multiple treatments may be needed for optimal results. Veins that respond well to treatment usually don’t return. A follow-up appointment may be scheduled a month after the procedure to track your progress and to determine if you need subsequent sessions.

Cost of Sclerotherapy in Westlake, OH

The cost of your sclerotherapy session will depend on the size of the treatment area and the severity of the condition.  Dr. Naar and the team customize each sclerotherapy treatment to fit the needs of every individual. As a result, the final cost will take into account several factors. During your consultation, we will discuss the financial details of your treatment. FAQ

Will I see my results right away?

How soon your results show will depend on the condition of your veins. The injected medication creates a natural response from the body so that results will appear gradually. Smaller veins networks can disappear as soon as the solution is injected, however larger, more prominent veins may take 2-3 months or longer to disappear.
